It's a source of happiness
Being a stan and keeping up with your idols is a source of happiness. Just by watching a movie, listening to a song, or watching sports, you can develop a sense of belonging and comfort. Although we’ve never met our idols, we somehow feel that we connect with them on a deeper level as if we’ve known them forever, and we can’t help but share this with other fans who feel the same way. These fans might have similar or completely different experiences, but you can be certain that you all feel the same happiness from your idols. This is how fandoms are born.
The mental health benefits
Being in fandom culture allows people to achieve a sense of belonging by giving them a reason to connect with other like-minded individuals online and in real life. Feeling like a part of a group can allow an individual to develop a sense of purpose outside their regular routine and allow them to have a sense of security.
Stan stereotypes
The world has misunderstood stans since the beginning. Stans are not limited to young girls or “nerds,” but stans can range from any age range, skin color, gender, nationality and more. In reality, these stereotypes cannot be farther from the truth. Many stans are incredibly talented and have a variety of skills, such as organization and planning, deep insight, good memory, creativity, and more!

In the past few years, the world has not only discovered the power of stan communities supporting their idols, but even a country’s economy! In 2018, the K-Pop group BTS contributed US$4.65 billion to South Korea’s GDP, while Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concerts boosted consumer spending by US$5 billion in the US alone. She was even credited for reviving tourism industries in cities she performed in! With that kind of influence, it’s time for the world to notice the power of fandom culture.
